An aluminium pergola gives shade or full cover without the upkeep of timber. The frame is powder-coated in a factory finish, so it never needs painting, it does not rot or attract termites, and it does not rust. That suits Greater Dandenong, where Moorabbin Airport, the nearest long-record Bureau of Meteorology station, records rain on about 103 days a year. Peak Pergolas designs and builds aluminium pergolas across Dandenong, Keysborough, Noble Park, Springvale and the surrounding suburbs, open or roofed, attached or free standing, each one measured on site, engineered for the span and finished in a colour chosen to suit the house.

Peak Pergolas Dandenong
Aluminium pergolas in Dandenong are built in three main forms, depending on how much shade and rain cover the space needs and whether it sits against the house.
An open aluminium pergola has posts, beams and a top of battens or fixed louvre blades. The spacing and angle of the blades set how much sun gets through, so the pergola can give strong summer shade while still letting low winter sun reach the house. It suits a courtyard, a deck or the front of a modern home.
The same frame can carry a solid roof for full rain cover. A Colorbond sheet roof is the economical option; an insulated panel roof blocks more heat and gives a finished ceiling underneath for lights and a fan. See insulated patios. For blades that open and close, see louvre roof pergolas.
A free standing aluminium pergola stands on its own posts, braced in both directions, over an outdoor kitchen, a spa or a seating area away from the house. Because aluminium is light, the frame can look slim while still being engineered for the span. See free standing pergolas.

Aluminium pergola designs range from minimal and modern to designs that match a traditional home. The profile of the posts and beams, the roof shape and the colour do most of the work.
Aluminium also makes it easy to add features later. Privacy screens, outdoor blinds and lighting tracks fix straight to the frame, and the same profiles can be used to build a matching screen or gate so the outdoor area looks designed as one piece.
On newer homes in Keysborough and Lyndhurst, slim square posts, flush beams and close battens give a clean, architectural look. Hidden fixings and internal gutters keep the lines tidy, and a charcoal or black finish matches modern window frames.
On a home with a pitched tiled roof, an aluminium frame can carry a gable roof drawn to the same pitch, so the pergola looks part of the house and gives extra headroom over the table. See gable roof pergolas for more on pitched roofs.
Aluminium frames are powder-coated in colours that match the Colorbond range, such as Monument, Basalt, Woodland Grey, Surfmist and Shale Grey. Matching the frame to the gutters, window frames or garage door makes the pergola look planned with the house. Timber-look finishes are also available where the warmth of timber is wanted without the upkeep.

Aluminium is light and strong for its weight, but a pergola only performs as well as its footings, fixings and drainage. Each is matched to the site.
Each post is bolted to a base plate on a concrete footing. A soil test sets the AS 2870 site class and the footing size, which matters on the sandy and former swamp ground in parts of Greater Dandenong. Because an aluminium frame is light, it relies on the footings and fixings to hold it down when wind gets under the roof; the mean 3pm wind speed at Moorabbin Airport peaks at 23.3 km/h in January.
An attached aluminium pergola is fixed to the fascia, to a beam bolted to the brickwork, or to a wall bracket on a rendered home, depending on which is strongest. The fixing is flashed so rain cannot run back behind it into the wall.
Winter brings the most wet days at Moorabbin Airport, around 11 to 12 a month in July and August. A roofed aluminium pergola has its gutter sized for the roof area, often concealed in the beam, with downpipes run inside or along the posts to the stormwater system.

Peak Pergolas builds outdoor structures only, across Greater Dandenong, and each job is quoted in writing with every item listed.
The free measure records the space, the fascia and window heights and the fall of the ground, and the design is drawn from those numbers. Profiles, roof and colour are chosen together, so the finished pergola sits at the right height and lines up with the house.
A small open pergola can be exempt in Victoria if it stays within 20 square metres, 3.6 metres high and 2.5 metres forward of the front of the house. A roofed pergola is treated like a verandah and needs a building permit. Engineering for footings, spans and wind is prepared with the drawings and lodged through a private building surveyor. See pergola permits.

Every aluminium pergola is priced from a free measure and a written, itemised quote.
The floor area sets most of the price. An open aluminium pergola with battens is the most economical form; a Colorbond roof adds to it, and insulated panels or a gable roof cost more again. Special finishes such as timber-look coatings cost more than standard colours, and a free standing frame costs more than an attached one of the same size because of the extra posts and bracing. Removing an old pergola and tight site access are listed separately.
Aluminium pergola kits come in fixed sizes and suit a simple open frame on a level site. A custom aluminium pergola is sized to the space, cut to fit the house, matched to the gutters in colour and supplied with footings, engineering and permit drawings, so it fits the site rather than the box.

Aluminium is one of three frame materials, and each has a place.
Many pergolas combine materials: an aluminium frame with a timber-look batten top, or aluminium posts carrying a steel beam over a long span. The right mix is worked out at the measure from the span, the look wanted and the upkeep the owner is happy with.
Galvanised steel is stiffer than aluminium for the same size, so it spans further with fewer posts. Over a wide alfresco or a double carport where a post in the middle would be in the way, a steel beam is the better choice, and it can be powder-coated to match. See carports for long-span steel frames.
On an older brick or weatherboard home, or in a garden setting, timber gives a warmth aluminium cannot match and can carry a vine. It needs oiling or painting every few years. See timber pergolas.

A visit to measure the house and the yard, talk through materials, roofs and colours, then a written, itemised quote.

Drawings and engineering are prepared for the site and the building permit is arranged wherever one is needed.

Footings, frame and roof are built and inspected at each stage, the site is cleaned up and the finished structure is handed over.
The cost depends on the size, the roof and the finish. An open aluminium pergola is the most economical, a Colorbond roof adds to it, and insulated or gable roofs cost more again. Removing an old pergola is priced separately. A free measure gives a written, itemised quote.
Very little. The powder-coated finish does not need painting, and aluminium does not rot or rust. A wash down with water every few months keeps the finish clean, and gutters should be cleared of leaves.
Aluminium is lighter and never needs painting. Steel is stiffer and spans further with fewer posts. Many pergolas use aluminium for the frame and a steel beam where a long span is needed.
Yes. An aluminium frame can carry Colorbond sheet or insulated panels, with a gutter sized for the roof area and downpipes to the stormwater system.
A small open pergola can be exempt within 20 square metres, 3.6 metres high and 2.5 metres forward of the front of the house. A roofed pergola needs a building permit, which is prepared as part of the job.
Powder-coated finishes match the Colorbond range, including Monument, Basalt, Woodland Grey, Surfmist and Shale Grey, plus timber-look finishes.
